That is when the structure of your jaw is strongest. Though it is compact (and being able to breathe naturally is A HUGE advantage) I like it most of all for the fact that when it's in and I know I'm going to eat a shot, when I bite down in it, my jaw is nearly closed. It's marketed as a "minimalist" mouthguard that will let you breathe very freely due to its tight fit and small profile. But I've found just the right one recently.Įxhibit A, the Shock Doctor Trashtalker. Getting it back in sucks, and it's a cumulative injury. I've had my jaw dislocated a couple times, and with the wrong mouthguard in, if I take a stiff shot at just the right angle, it's out. Besides the film delaminating on the outside, they’re pretty much perfect mouth guards.Ī make or break factor for me is jaw position/closure with the mouthguard in. They also offer custom moulded guards with tons of options. I think for a boil and bite mouth guard, they are amazing for the pretty mid range price. They also offer custom graphics if you have something you’d like to put on. Damage control has a huge array of graphics from fangs to grills to flags to smoking a cigar. Value & Style: style wouldn’t normally matter to me but I like some of my gear to be kinda goofy. They’ve updated the design though so maybe they’ve fixed it. I had to get rid of my first one because of this and it’s starting to happen on one of my current ones. Quality: my only dig at damage control is the clear film on the outside that covers the graphic seems to de laminate after a while. They make an extreme impact guard with more protection apparently. They are superior to everything I’ve used and I only have the high impact ones. With the damage control guards, I feel nothing on the teeth even when I catch an errant head butt or forearm to the mouth. I used mouth guards with plates in them to “disperse shock” but I found those just hurt more of my teeth when I’d get punched. The shock doctor guards I’ve used have felt much too thick for my liking and I found they kept my mouth a little too open but the damage control guards feel very natural even though they’re huge. Speaking with one is laboured but understandable and for its size, the guard is actually very unobtrusive in the mouth. Here is why Damage Control is my favourite thus far.įit: these are by far the biggest mouthguards ive used, but they fit in a way that feels really nice and snug around the teeth. I’ve used plenty of guards including Damage Control, Rival, Shock Doctor, and the shitty no name boil and bite ones. I imagine this is a component that is often overlooked, but in my opinion, your mouth guard is just as important as the rest of your gear, as a bad mouth guard can not only mess up your training, it can be downright dangerous.
